Thanks for a great season opening! We picked a few highlights from our first event of the year to showcase a some really cool shopping and food vendors, as well as entertainment and special performances!
One of the most interesting additions to our merchandise vendors is Gacha x2. The walls of their booths are made of gachapon (ガチャポン) vending machines that dispense capsule toys popular in Japan. All of their toys are imported from Japan can could be little anime figurines, funny hats for your cat or food keychains. The vendor also changed out their toys every few hours so if you kept coming back, you might see new toys! Gacha x2 will be back for our OC June event.
Beauty Nostalgia is a returning crafts vendor who usually sells their succulents by the Art Walk inside the Promenade. Recently, their 3D-printed succulent pots based on popular characters became a huge hit. Look at these adorable Bulbasaur and Pac-Man succulents! This vendor will be back for our OC June event but be warned that these sell out quick, so get your hands on one if you see it!
Love patches? Personalize your jacket, bag or hat with a patch from Patchy Patchenstein! Patches are an indie trend that resurfaced recently along with enamel pins. Find everything from desserts, superhero characters, cute animals and emo phrases such as “All Black Everything” on a black heart. This vendor also owns the Forever Love Flowers booth, so you are sure to fine one close to the other! They will be at all OC and 626 Night Market events this year.
For food, by far the most decadent and most mind-blowingly delicious thing we ate was the bone marrow with 24K gold from new vendor The Golden Marrow. They cracked open a femur bone, roasted it over an open flame, and then drizzled it with house made sauces and specialty toppings. We tried their 3 flavors: Garlic with black garlic oil, Bacon with bacon jam, and Korean with gochujang and kimchi. The garlic was our favorite! You eat it by scraping the marrow off the bone and mixing it with the egg dumplettes. They will be at all OC and 626 events except for OC June and 626 August.
Will 2019 go down as the year of the White Rabbit candy? This classic candy is a delicious and creamy snack with a thin sheet of edible rice paper wrapped around it. After we saw an image of Wanderlust Creamery’s White Rabbit candy-flavored ice cream go viral, we couldn’t wait to try this new vendor at our event! We got it with the ube cone with the candy wrapper. The ice cream is luxuriously creamy with the milky taste of the White Rabbit candy. Very high quality stuff and we enjoyed it thoroughly! They also had a lot of other intriguing flavors such as Ube Malted Crunch, Sakura and Japanese Neapolitan but unfortunately we were too full to try more. Wanderlust Creamery will be back at all OC and 626 events, so maybe we’ll try a different flavor each event!
Golden and fluffy Hong Kong egg waffles are a popular street snack. The sweet, waffle-like batter is cooked in a special mold. The end result is a waffle with crisp edges and soft oval “eggs” or “bubbles” which can be easily broken off for snacking. Vendor Waffleland is a Night Market veteran and we usually pick up the mochi waffle, but this time we tried chocolate. Delicious! You can also get waffles with ice cream. Waffleland will be at the rest of our OC and 626 Night Market events.
We had our first fire dancer ever at our event! Kiyoshi Shishido gave a fiery performance swallowing fire and dancing with fire hoops and fans with many cheers and gasps of awe from the audience. He was like a real fire bender!
A few magicians roamed the Night Market, performing all kinds of magic from card tricks to disappearing objects. Magician Anna Deguzman is a viral sensation for her cardistry, making appearances on TV shows, produces her own content, and performs around the world. Magician Elton Keung is founder of famed alcoholic boba shop Labobatory and always kept his passion for magic on the side. Now, he is a Magician Member of the Magic Castle.
The high point of OC Night Market every year is always the Horizon Dance Competition! Teams of dancers competed for the $1,000 grand prize. A big crowd gathered to watch each team’s music, choreography and energy all come together for an awesome show.
Congrats to Gen Z, the 2019 winners of the Horizon Dance Competition!
